This car originated from some racecar talk between TTDriver and myself, knowing his interest in classic and vintage open wheel machinery. Based on the iconic Lancia/Ferrari D50, the first Grand Prix car to ever feature side pods (as streamlined fuel tanks, in this case) - which later became a staple of single seater racer design, especially after moving to mid-engined setups.
I tried to emulate the feel of old, skinny, hard compound racing tires as much as possible with RV's physics, while still keeping the car somewhat balanced - understeery, rather slow accelerating (but not Pest Control levels of "slow"), with top end as its main saving grace. Watch out when exiting low speed corners - these things were vicious back in the day!
Model and parameters (and rim texture :P) by yours truly, details and paintjob (including the paintkit) by TT. Expect a skin soon-ish too... ;)
EDIT Mar 12, 2023: revised AI details by Kipy were added. Now drives slightly less erratically even on the original nodes for stock tracks... I forgot to update this, the AI details are almost a month old by now :S
EDIT Sep 28, 2023: Thank you FZG for noticing, there was indeed a small mapping bug on one of the two sidepods. Your body has been included in the actual car package as well.
It’s a very interesting concept. I like the model and texture. The interesting thing is that in order to drive this car, you need to get used to it. Yes, it adds complexity to the game, but I love it. Just as I thought the car was light, as it doesn’t fly low with shockwaves and fakes. It’s fun too. All in all, it’s a very good job, guys!
The car well resembles to the oldschool gp cars as you’ve mentioned. Reading the description, you guys made a very good job.
Handling is challenging enough to the users, battery usage provides no major change. Well, AI struggles the most with the vehicle’s characteristics, but ikr that’s the least interesting/important part to the majority.
Keep up the good work.
This is a 1954 Lancia D50. Who was the pilot of the car number 50? Very good at driving!
