Surprise, surprise, another Hot Wheels Extreme Racing model for the PS1, and this one is simply called 4x4. Now, you may be wondering about the carbox....Well, I wasn't able to put the name 4x4 in the carbox, it was too big, so I just put "Hot Wheels 4x4" so that it would fit. Anyhow, this one is an oddball, although there is a Humvee from an official casting by Mattel, this one is an exclusive car, which is a modified Hummer H1 Alpha, but to avoid licensing, so I suppose THQ just made this one quite unique for the game. This is one of the 3 starter cars, followed by Silhouette II and Cat-A-Pult. 4x4 is a pretty good car, although not fast, but good armour and handling. It excels in offroading more than tarmac. It sits quite nicely in Amateur class (What, you expect this to be fast? In your dreams), good acceleration, handling and moderate speed. Enjoy using it.

    Credits:

THQ for the original model and sound.

Scurest for the 3D Screenshot inplemetation for Duckstation.

    LivingWithGames for the parameter tweaking.

  1. Another nostalgic vehicle lands into RVW.

Tho, i would personally recolor the rims to rusty or muddy ones to fit the wasteland aesthetics but then again, it’s an opinion.

Performance… Slow & heavy, but still manageable with fair effort nonetheless.

  2. That’s because the wheels in the original game were not 3D, Pavel. They were sprites, a lot like in S.C.A.R.S. The textures of the car were low res, that’s from the original mapping. I do agree the texture for the wheel is big, though. But what are you supposed to do when the textures for the car in that game that small?

Giving it 1.9 stars that harshly is uncalled for.

  3. It’s clear that this car was ported from another old game, but look at the uneven pixel density. Somehow the wheels look better quality than the body of this car. As far as I understand, the original texture had no wheels, but why not at least include a wheel next to it, but smaller in size, and not 1/4 of the entire texture resolution.
