The theme is supposed to be slot cars. And yet I don’t quite buy it. The track does have “slots”, and initially it follows the theme,but then it suddenly stops and becomes a tabletop track. With track limits enforced by pencils and parts of the slot car track (that you don’t drive on, they’re just a decoration) the whole thing looks more like a Micro Machines track than a Re-Volt one.
Visually it’s not that great to look at either – the racing-related banners are adding to the vibe, but the enormous, ugly vacuum of a repeated square background brings it all back down. Then there’s the issue of things like barriers not looking very polished, in fact you can clearly see the edges.
The layout itself though is quite interesting. Not a lot of powerups, but enough to have some fun even in 16-car grid. Lapping around the track isn’t a materpiece experience, but it’s not bad per se. If only the theme and visuals were done better…
