It really looks like the good old platformer indeed! As someone who played Super Mario Run once, the music does fit well too. Some sections are a little confusing, possibly due to how flat the shading is (which I'm pretty sure is intentional, and that's okay) and as you stated, pickups go crazy in the pipe sections due to high poly count, but it's fine. The bottomless pits on each side of the track get a little jarring at times too. All in all, a pretty great track and I recommend it.
